KCK All in Two Cloth Mama Pad Sew-Along

Cutting your fabric

Print a copy of the Kayla's Cloth Kits cloth mama pad pattern.  Cut the 2 pieces out directly on the line (no seam allowance is necessary).

Use the KCK cloth mama pad main body pattern as a guide to cut one piece from your outer layer fabric (which will face the underwear).   Also cut one piece from your inner layer fabric (which will face your skin). Shown: White cotton fleece outer fabric and purple flower flannel inner fabric.

Make sure to mark where the hook and loop tape will be placed on the inner and outer layers of fabric (shown in purple disappearing ink).

Cutting and Sewing the soaker

Use the KCK cloth mama pad pattern to cut your soaker layers. The number of layers will depend on the type of fabric and amount of absorbency needed. See fabric suggestions. Pin all of the soaker layers together. Shown: 4 layer flannel soaker.  Note: if you use a microfiber soaker you will need to cut a piece of your inner fabric to encase your soaker layers because microfiber should not contact the skin for prolonged amounts of time.

Sew around the perimeter of the soaker with a zig zag stitch so that the “zig” hits the layers of your soaker and the “zag” runs off the edge of your fabric. Alternatively, you can use an over lock stitch if you have one. Make sure to reinforce your start and stop points. Also make sure that all of the layers get sewn to avoid holes!  I've used multi-colored thread so that you can see the zig zag technique on this pattern.

Sewing Velcro to the Soaker

Cut a 3"x1" piece of hook (rough) tape and a 3"x1" inch piece of loop (soft) tape.

Center the 3" hook tape on your soaker pad and attach it to your soaker with a zig zag stitch.

Sewing Velcro to the Main Body

Cut a 1" x 1" piece of hook (rough) tape and a 1" x 1" piece of loop (soft) tape.

Pin a 1" x 1" piece of hook (rough) tape to the good side of your outer fabric approximately ½ of an inch from the cut edge using the KCK cloth mama pad pattern marks  for reference.

Pin a 1" x 1" piece of loop (soft) tape to the good side of your outer fabric approximately ½ of an inch from the cut edge using the KCK cloth mama pad pattern marks  for reference.

Checking Hook and Loop Placement

Place the two main body pieces together (good sides facing out) and check to make sure that the hook and loop closures line up well with each other when you fold the pad.

Use a zig zag stitch to attach the hook (rough) tape to the good side of your outer fabric approximately ½ of an inch from the cut edge. Next, use a zig zag stitch to attach the loop (soft) tape to the good side of your inner fabric approximately ½ of an inch from the cut edge.  Shown: attaching and sewing the loop tape to the inner fabric

Trim the four sharp corners off of the hook and loop (these can stab at you and make you uncomfortable if you don’t trim them).

Use a zig zag stitch to attach the 3 inch piece of loop (soft) tape that you cut to the good side of your inner fabric. This Velcro will be responsible for securing the removable soaker to the pad’s main body.

Sewing the Main Body

Bring the inner and outer main body pieces of your KCK cloth mama pad together (WRONG sides facing each other, good sides-with the Velcro- facing out) and pin.

Sew around the perimeter of the cloth mama pad with a zig zag stitch so that the “zig” hits the layers of your pad and the “zag” runs off the edge of your fabric. Alternatively, you can use an over lock stitch if you have one. Make sure to reinforce your start and stop points. Also make sure that all of the layers get sewn to avoid holes!

KCK cloth mama pad washing instructions: Wash your KCK cloth mama pads in the same way that you would wash cloth diapers.  Use warm to hot water with very little detergent (about 1/8 of the manufacturer's suggested amount).  An extra rinse cycle is advisable to prevent build up of detergent on your cloth pads.  The Kayla's Cloth Kits cloth mama pads can be dryed in a dryer or air dried.
